I went to a big business meeting called the Direct Selling Summit. I thought I'd hear the same old stories. But I was wrong. I met someone who really inspired me.
The main speaker was Mike. I remembered hearing about him years ago. When he walked on stage, I was surprised. He was so short! How could this little guy be such a big deal?
But when Mike started talking, he seemed to grow taller. He told us about how he went from being the shortest basketball player to a top producer in direct selling.
Mike said, "In basketball, I always looked up at other players. But in business, I learned that being tall doesn't matter. What matters is how high you aim."
Mike's story was really interesting. He told us about sleeping in his car when he played basketball. He never gave up on his dreams. When he had to stop playing because of injuries, he didn't know what to do. Then a friend told him about direct selling.
"At first, I thought it was silly," Mike laughed. "Me, selling face creams? But then I figured out that this business is all about people. And I knew how to talk to people."
He told us how he used what he learned in basketball to do well in his new venture. He treated prospecting calls like free throws in basketball - a chance to get better each time. Building his team was like being a coach, helping everyone do their best.
Mike gave us some really good advice:
1. Use what makes you different. It's your secret weapon.
2. When someone says no, learn from it. Don't feel bad.
3. Build a good team and be happy when they do well.
4. Always try to get better at what you do.
5. Keep trying, even when things are hard.
After Mike's talk, I waited in line to meet him. When it was my turn, I thought he'd just shake my hand. But he surprised me. He asked, "What's your story? Why are you here?"
I told him about my problems with my business. Mike really listened. Then he gave me some great advice.
He said, "Remember, every 'no' gets you closer to a 'yes.' In basketball, I missed more shots than I made. But the shots that went in? They won games. Your business works the same way."
As I left, I felt excited about my business again. Mike showed me that you can do great things if you don't give up.
I learned that being successful in direct selling - or any business - isn't about being the biggest or loudest. It's about keeping going, changing when you need to, and really wanting to help others do well.
Mike may be short, but he showed me that anyone can do big things. On my way home, I couldn't wait to try his ideas in my own business. After all, if a short basketball player could become a star in direct selling, I could do great things too!
