First Steps in Building Your Direct Selling Business

Starting a direct selling business can be an exciting and rewarding journey. As someone who has experienced both the challenges and triumphs in this industry, I want to share some crucial insights to help you lay a strong foundation for your new venture.

1. Focus, Take Ownership, and Be Consistent

These three actions are paramount when getting started in direct selling:

- Focus: Make your business a priority. Be willing to sacrifice other activities to dedicate time and energy to your new venture. In my first 5 years, I stopped watching TV programs except for training. Once in a while, I watched a movie. I stopped going out and spending time with people who wouldn't contribute to my success.

- Take Ownership: Remember, this is your business. You are responsible for its success or failure. Don't rely on others to build it for you. I never relied on my sponsors or blamed them. I took ownership and found ways to succeed when I couldn't get the required support.

- Be Consistent: Work your business every day. Consistent daily activities build momentum and habits that lead to success. For the first 3 and a half years, I slept for only 4 hours a day until I made it big. You don't have to do this now since technology and tools are more readily available.

2. Upgrade Yourself

If possible, start with or upgrade to the highest investment level in your company. This shows commitment and allows you to advance in rank more quickly, potentially leading to higher earnings. It also sets a powerful example for your team. I had to borrow money to start, then bootstrapped my business by reinvesting from my salary and commissions until I got off the ground.

3. Establish and Write Down Your Goals

Set specific, measurable goals for both the short and long term. Write them down and share them with your sponsor. These goals will keep you accountable and motivated. Even today, I continue to write down bigger goals. It's your roadmap towards progress.

4. Create a Contact List

Develop a list of at least 250 warm market contacts. Don't prejudge anyone - write down everyone you know. This list is your initial inventory in this business.

5. Schedule Your Appointments

Before approaching prospects, ensure you've completed your company's "Getting Started" training. Schedule a game plan meeting with your sponsor to set goals and plan your launch.

6. Get Equipped with Tools

Familiarize yourself with the tools available in your company, such as videos, websites, brochures, and presentations. These will help you effectively share your business opportunity and products. Third-party tools are crucial to scale your business and add credibility, making your life easier.

7. Analyze Your List

During your business plan meeting with your sponsor, go through your contact list. Categorize and prioritize your prospects to determine the best approach for each. This will help tailor your approach to different prospects.

8. Blast Your List

Start contacting people on your list, directing them to a prospecting video or website. Follow up to book appointments for detailed business opportunity presentations.

9. Launch Your Business

Plan a launch event, either at home, in a small commercial location, or online. This celebrates the start of your business and introduces your opportunity to friends and family. Speed and consistency create momentum.

10. Embrace Personal Growth and Mentorship

Continuously work on improving your skills and mindset. Seek guidance from successful individuals in your company or industry to avoid common pitfalls and accelerate your growth. Daily personal and skill development is crucial to accelerate. Learn and implement consistently. I turned my TV, car, and dead time into a learning platform, listening to audios, watching training videos, and reading books related to the business.

Remember, building a successful direct selling business takes time, patience, and persistence. Stay committed to your goals, even when progress seems slow. With the right mindset, consistent effort, and these strategic first steps, you can turn your direct selling dreams into reality. Your journey is unique, and with dedication, you can achieve remarkable results in this industry.
